Booji's Beautiful World DVD Stats: MPEG-2 video (4:3) AC3 audio (192kbps) Lineage: lowest-gen VHS around -> Sony MiniDV camera -> CCE (multipass VBR) + AC3 encoder -> DVD Video supplied by Brian Applegate DVD created by Scott Stanton NOTES: There's quite a bit to be said about this show. Most importantly, it's the only visual record publically available of the 1982 "Oh No" tour, where the band played in sync to and interacted with a rear-projected film. This might seem like a novelty now, but at the time it was revolutionary. The band actually projected 16mm film behind themselves, a very hard thing to set up. This specific show was an experiment that DEVO signed up for and, of course, went wrong. The sound man apparently thought he was correcting the sync on DEVO's backing track (the one on the film), when in reality, the offset was supposed to be there to enable the band to keep sync. During "Speed Racer", the band begins to lose sync with the film, and try to stop the show during "Big Mess", to no avail. "Big Mess" is barely played, but we do get to see the whole backing video and hear the click track. The show after that runs smoothly, but Mark's rant during "Jocko Homo" and Booji's during "Beautiful World" are absolutely pricess. Never have I heard the band so angry on stage. A few more factual notes: This is the only known performance of the most excellent song "Explosions", and it's a great performance. The 3-D here isn't very good, but if you need to see for yourself, it's polarized 3-D, not red/blue. The tape was supplied by DEVO uber-fan Brian Applegate, who's tape is the source for all circulating copies. We were allowed to borrow his master to make this DVD. It was made into a DVD by Scott Stanton of Sick Video, who you may remember as being responsible for the official DEVO DVD, "Live in the Land of the Rising Sun". This is noted as "Disc 2" because Disc 1 features the opening set by Wall of Voodoo and the segments with annoying host for the night, JJ Wall. Mr. Wall originally appeared and made annoying comments during DEVO's intermission. That has been removed from this disc and placed on Disc 1 so all you get here is unedited DEVO greatness. I keep saying "unedited" because the show was edited down for re-broadcast later, with a bunch of schlocky 3-D effects added to the mix, and the songs that went wrong and Mark's rants were cut out.
