I'm a big fan of Sigur Rós, but not so much of their last album, 'Með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust', or of Jónsi's solo outings. They're OK, but I'm not wild about them. I attended this gig in order to try out the 'Go' material live. I'm glad I did, because it came across a lot better in a live setting than in the studio. Tonight's show at the Paradiso had been sold out for months, so a second gig was added for 3rd June. I considered going to both, but just the one is enough for me. The merchandise stand was selling, amongst the usual tat, Jónsi raw chocolate bars. Although they were EUR 4 a pop, I got one for my wife, a rabid chocoholic. Inside the main hall, I had to manoeuvre and worm my way down to the front. The crowd were packed in tightly. It was hot in there and I was a little concerned that the chocolate in my pocket would melt. Security was tighter than I've seen it before in the Paradiso. Although entry through the doors was as relaxed as ever, monitoring of the audience was quite strict and I saw many people approached by security staff and sternly told to stop taking photographs. I had to operate in full stealth mode to avoid getting the dreaded tap on the shoulder. Jónsi ran through the whole of 'Go', complementing it with some as yet unreleased songs. This ran the gamut from fragile piano pieces to deafening crescendos of reverberated feedback: a jolly good racket from start to finish, that's for sure. As the gig progressed, Jónsi looked progressively more ridiculous, leaping and thrashing about all over the stage, sporting an Indian headdress adorned with brightly dyed feathers. The man is an eccentric and isn't afraid to express his unique style. More power to him, regardless of what I think of his aesthetic choices. As I was filing out of the venue, I bumped into a chap who had managed to grab a set list from the stage. I took a photo of it outside the venue. Many of the titles given, however, are not the official ones. Where these differ, I have given the jocular title in parentheses above. No mastering of the recording has been performed, so you're hearing it exactly the way I did. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!
