Race COMMENT Part of the "Glam Slam Box" also containing 'Glam Slam North' and 'Glam Slam East' housed in a black wrap-around cardboard sleeve. Containing a complete show, highlights from a second show and the complete broadcast VH-1 Honors this is an excellent release in surprisingly excellent quality. The majority of the release contains the 26th June Glam Slam show with various surprises and many highlights. The show opens rather unusually with 'The Jam' before leading into 'I Believe In You'. There appear to be some sound problems during the intro to 'Interactive' and it has a rather weak opening. As normal 'Now' includes a portion of 'Hair', however this time a slightly lengthier bass jam from '777-9311' is added much to the crowd's roar of approval. Stevie Wonder guests on 'Maybe Your Baby' which he begins with a speech heaping praise on Prince and naming various musical influences before they launch into his track. Mavis Staples is the next surprise guest and grabs the mic for 'I'll Take You There' with the crowd helping her out enthusiastically. 'Dark' is a nice addition, however it is proceeded with various shouts from the crowd for Prince songs "Purple Rain", "Little Red Corvette" and "It's Gonna Be Lonely" amongst others. A short, extremely funky breakneck speed instrumental jam leads into a 15 minute version of 'Get Wild' with a "cover version" of 'Peach' to close out the show. The recording is excellent and of very high quality, however the crowd in close proximity to the person recording are rather audible at times and there are a number of fades throughout the recording. The disc also includes the VH-1 Honors broadcast and whilst it is excellent bonus material, it is the edited version with the word "bitch" from the line "Ain't that a bitch" in 'Interactive' removed - however that's my only small complaint regarding it. To complete the release we have an incomplete recording of the 27th June Glam Slam show. The complete recording is circulating on 'Acknowledge Me', however as the songs differ so greatly from the previous nights show I don't mind their inclusion on here. The quality of the recording is tinnier, thinner and with a louder audience level than the 26th June recording, but still of a high quality. The accompanying booklet is very typical of a 1994 release with a number of pictures lifted from the German 'Max' magazine photo shoot. There are a number of incorrectly titled songs on the back cover - '777-9311' is mistakenly listed as 'Soft & Wet' being the most obvious - but it's hardly a hanging offence. Overall this release has excellent content in excellent quality and (for it's time) pretty decent packaging. A winner!
