Ghost Of A Chance 21. announcer Here are 13 CDR’s worth of in-the studio performances, interviews, artists tributes and tracks from WWOZ's live archives that were culled from WWOZ’s fall 2004 pledge drive. For example, David Torkanowsky was joined live on the air by Troy “Trumpet Slim” Andrews, James Martin, and an unnamed bassist and drummer. They chatted and played 4 songs from their upcoming (still unreleased) cd, “The Titanic Orchestra.” This is a seasoned journeyman musician, a real keyboard genius joined by some teen-aged musicians. Discs 9 and 10 are an air check that’s 2 and 1/2 hour interview/tribute/pledge pitch with Clarence 'Frogman' Henry who is still alive and playing 200 nights a year. Buddy Holly covered Frogman's "Ain't Got No Home" over 45 years ago...AND the Beatles had him open on 19 shows on their 1964 USA tour…those accomplishments alone should tell you something about the Frogman. And disc 11, 12 and 13 are a 3 hour live broadcast of Snooks Eaglin backed by Brotherhood Of Groove with special guests George Porter Jr., Ivan Neville, David Torkanowsky, James and Troy Andrews, Eddie Bo, Big Chief Alfred Dousset, and more...live outside the 'OZ studios in Armstrong Park (formerly Congo Square) and under the stars during a lunar eclipse. For example, Gatemouth Brown did a 10 minute interview, whereas The Neville Brothers did 2 seperate 1 hour plus interviews, one day it was a rare Art Neville interview (with his son, Ian and Aaron's son Ivan) and the next day it was Aaron, Charles, Cyril, and Ivan Neville who showed up. Anders Osborn came in to the studio and played some acoustic songs on guitar and was then coaxed into playing on the piano his then-newest composition, followed by his N’Awlins classic, Summertime In New Orleans. Chris Thomas King talked about being in the film "RAY" as Llowell Fulsom, the Bob French and Friends set is a different show than the one offered previously on TTD, Henry Butler dropped in and played 2 songs on the piano that resides in the WWOZ studios (it was James Booker's piano).....and so on.... This is the on-going musical heritage of a city that some jerks in Congress had the nerve to suggest that maybe it shouldn't be rebuilt. This is one on the seminal cities of our country and the music is a melting pot of many diverse cultures and races. You just don't get that stuff anywhere else. Here in one collection are Cajun musicians playing acoustic (Sunpie Barnes on his “Acadian Air Compressor” -- his accordion, for you non-Zydeco types), here is Sicilian Swing, here is Mardi Gras Indian chants, sea chanteys, blues, funk, singer-songwriters, jazz, rock, and arguably the REAL Queen of Soul, Miss Irma Thomas. So if you think that those apple-knockers in Congress and the media are right and that N’Awlins shouldn't be rebuilt, then you just don't get it.
