I say "rough" because there are spots where things randomly move around or change position in the stereo image like the mixer is experimenting with the mix. Besides that, the mix is excellent and balanced most of the time. It's most likely that this show was leaked by a member of the band like a couple of other pro-recorded shows from this era. I wish that more of Frank's band members were as generous. I decided to remaster this show mainly because it's a board recording of my favorite live Frank Zappa sequence. Envelopes>Drowning Witch>Baltimore>Moggio is in my opinion one of Frank's most impressive compostions and sequences. Steve Vai's guitar playing adds a new demension to Frank's compositions. Some people might be familiar with this performance of "Broken Hearts Are For Assholes" which appears on the "Apocrypha" bootleg box (in inferior quality). The original used here was very well done but the EQ was shrill and one-dimensional and it hurt my ears, so I softened it up and made it sound a lot more natural and balanced. There is quite a bit of hiss but I tried to achieve just the right EQ balance without accentuating the hiss too much. I don't use noise reduction because it destroys the sound, so that was out of the question. The source for this show sounds like it's a few tape gens down the line. It actually sounds like an FM broadcast because it's so lacking in high end and dynamic range from being copied so many times. If this show was a lower gen source, it would surely be A+ quality...but this torrent is merely an A- because of the generation. This is still a teriffic show that every Zappa (and Steve Vai) fan should have. - JWB -------------------------------------------------------- This is the lineage info from the original: -------------------------------------------------------- This show is a combination of 2 different sources: Tape 1 running until the marimba solo in King Kong Tape 2 starting with Craig Steward's harmonica solo Lineage tape 1: SBD>cassette>(?)cassette TDK SA-90>Nakamichi DR-10>Terratec DMX6 Fire soundcard>Adobe Audition 1.5>WAV>speed correction>Flac Frontend encoding level 5>FLAC tape recorded: unknown tape transferred: Notwhatitused2B Lineage tape 2 CDR>EAC>Flac Frontend>Adobe Audition>speed correction>boosting levels>Flac Frontend encoding level 5>FLAC Received by Yojimbo in a trade with Blackpage tape recorded: unknown tape transferred: Patrick Neve ------------- BEEFHEART NOTES: This album was recorded in early 1976 but never released. This particular dub was made from an ANA(1) copy given to a record company employee by Beefheart himself. This same tape has been bootlegged on CDR with excessive noise reduction, but this fresh new transfer is completely free of NR. Don't be fooled by the European bootleg "Dust Sucker" which comes from a very poor quality tape, and not the "Captain's original tapes" as the liner notes claim. This copy is the real deal!
