"A Love Supreme" BBC Radio 4 Documentary 27:58 BBC Radio 4 > Sky Digital Reciever > Audio CD Recorder broadcast Tuesday 23 November 2004 Marking forty years since it was released, Jez Nelson profiles John Coltrane's legendary album A Love Supreme, looking at it from the perspective of the players, fans and those for whom the spiritual message of the album remains a profound influence in their daily lives. Telling the story of the album's conception, the programme retraces the 'deal' Coltrane made with God in order to give up his drug habit, and how Coltrane apparently received the music for the album in a divine vision. Contributors include Coltrane's biographer Ashley Kahn, his wife and fellow musician Alice Coltrane, musicians in the group McCoy Tyner and Elvin Jones, modern classical composer Steve Reich, and Archbishop Franzo King from the Church of John Coltrane in San Francisco. ------------------ Branford Marsalis played and recorded A Love Supreme at the Bimhuis in Amsterdam. It was published in November 2004 as Coltrane's A Love Supreme in Amsterdam LIVE (DVD and CD). This is an earlier performance of A Love Supreme in London 2001, with the same personnel!
