Afrika Bambaataa (& the Soul Sonic Force) 10-2-82 Fort Lauderdale, FL @ Penrod's It was recorded at a club called Penrod's on A1A in Ft. Lauderdale Beach on Oct 2, 1982. The short opening set of electro was by 'the Sonic Patrol" which was pretty much DJ Jazzy Jay of the Zulu Nation fame on synths and the beatbox. The 2nd set with the rappers was by Soul Sonic Force which consisted of Mr. Big, Pow Wow and the G-L-O-B-E or MC Globe. All of the music was performed live, not DJ'ed off of vinyl by Bambaata. This show was mastered on a Marantz PMD 360 cassette deck with Realistic mics which were clones of the famous Sure Uni Ball's made at that time. The show was taped onto Maxell UDXLII tape which was the best there was back then. I recorded the show directly in front of the stage with the mics on a table, each mic propped up by a pack of Marlboros! There were maybe 20 or 30 people in the house that night as most people in FL at the time had no idea who Soul Sonic Force was. As far as I know this show was from the first tour Soul Sonic ever did outside of New York City. I have always wondered what other dates/locations they may of played on that tour. My tape is the only tape of that tour I have ever heard of. Later on I got to see DJ Bambaata and Soul Sonice Force again at various NYC venues like the Roxy. Unfortunatly I did not tape those additional shows. I made several copies of the Ft Lauderdale show off my cassette masters for trades over the years and I have no idea of the lineage/final source of the torrent currently being seeded here. This is the true old school and Soul Sonic absolutely ripped shit that night. Planet Rock was a revolutionary jam in its day which completely changed the direction of hip hop and electronic dance music in general. I was truly lucky to of been able to tape these legends of the NYC old school.
