Al DiMeola May 30, 1982 Utrecht, Netherlands @ Vredenburg FM/SBD > ? > remaster > CDR Acoustic Set: 01 - Orient Blue > Passion, Grace & Fire 02 - Short Tales Of The Black Forest Electric Set: 03 - Electric Rendezvous 04 - Al Di's Dream Theme (fades out - incomplete) 05 - God Bird Change (fades in - incomplete) 06 - Theme To The Mothership 07 - Race With Devil On Spanish Highway 08 - Advantage (fades out - incomplete) Al Di Meola - Acoustic & Electric Guitar Anthony Jackson - Bass, Marimba Simon Phillips - Drums Phillipe Saisse - Keyboards, Marimba Mingo Lewis - Percussion -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This was a very muffled and "muddy" sounding show - the original had no high frequencies at all and overpowering lows (perhaps Dolby was used during the tape transfer to CD?) It was also unbalanced with the left channel louder than the right. In addition, there were 30+ loud digital glitches throughout. To correct these issues I manually removed all the major digital glitches where possible. I also boosted the right channel volume by 20%. The acoustic tracks (Tracks 1 & 2) sounded decent as is (other than all the digital glitches) so no EQ was used - although I did have to re-index these tracks properly using CDWave. The electric tracks needed to be totally re-equalized, which I did using the graphic equalizer in Click 'N Edit Sound LE. In simple terms, I dialed the low frequencies way back and signifiantly boosted the highs while keeping the midrange relatively flat. While this has slightly increased tape hiss, the overall sound is much clearer and more detailed than before - check out the samples. There are still some issues present so this show is not perfect. There are a couple of instances of FM interference and signal drift, as well as some minor "ticks" that could not be removed. In addition, on Track 7, the stereo signal drops and the last 2 minutes or so are in mono. Despite these minor flaws, the show itself is excellent - which is why I spent the time remastering it instead of painting the house, cleaning the car, walking the dog, or talking to the wife :-) Al rips it up on both acoustic and electric guitars and the rhythm section of Jackson and Phillips are superb.
